Compulsive Overeater: On the Verge of Getting Help

dialing_phoneIf you've been a compulsive overeater most of your life you know your health gets increasingly worse and you battle with depression.

Diets and drugs such as Prozac, may give you temporary hope or relief but nothing deeply changes your inner pain or eliminates your compulsive overeating.

Guided Imagery and Eating Disorder Treatment

Guided imagery and other methods that reach under the conscious thinking mind can be useful in your eating disorder recovery. People with eating disorders often have secrets from themselves. These are secrets about which they have little or no awareness.

Guilt, shame and severe self-criticism accompany most eating disorders. People believe they are doing something weak and wrong by abusing themselves with too much or not enough food, or by taking laxatives or vomiting, or by compulsively exercising to work off calories. They can be merciless in their self-punishing thoughts.

Beware of Pro Mia and Pro Ana Invitations

I just got an invitation on Facebook from someone I believe may be innocent, naive and unaware of the dangers of fasting and the impact her invitation could have on people with eating disorders or who are vulnerable to develop an eating disorder.  She invited me and others to join her in a three day vegetable and fruit fast saying that it would be a way to lose weight and would give health benefits as well. Do you see the dangers in this invitation?

Getting Through a Meal With Strength and Serenity

Getting through the days, the nights, the meals, the snack times without overeating or starving is a challenge for people with eating disorders.

Often people write or call me to say, "Yes, I keep my journal. I see my therapist. I go to 12 step meetings. I'm learning to be kind and compassionate with myself. But what can I do about the food? Please help me."

What people specifically mean by this plea varies with each individual. But they clearly express their bewilderment and anguish as they attempt to find and develop new attitudes and behaviors toward daily eating.

Middle Aged Women: Heal and Renew with Nautilus as Inspiration

United Press has an article on depression in middle aged women saying, "fifteen percent of U.S. women between the ages of 45 and 64 experience frequent depression, a U.S. researcher says.

I invite you to look at these statistics not as a grim call for medication but as a trumpeting call that announces a new and more satisfying way of living.
