Seven Reasons to Call Joanna for Psychotherapy
I understand that your emotional situation is uniquely yours yet occurs within the context of a complex living situation you may want to maintain, change or leave. Also, you are aging (as we all are), and your physical and emotional needs, priorities and desires are changing.
After 30-plus years of being a psychotherapist, plus recovering from an eating disorder, I bring experience, understanding, and compassion to our therapy sessions while I provide you with healing and growth opportunities.
We sort through what you see and what you don’t see as together we find meaning in your experience.
We create new self-care tools, find solutions to problems and often bring unexpected new satisfaction and joys into your life.

During that conversation, you and I will determine if an in-person appointment seems like the best next step for you. If it is not, then I will do my best to refer you to the kind of treatment we both decide is in your best interest.
If we agree that a psychotherapy appointment is the next right step, I will first send you the required legal forms such as HIPPA, informed consent, and basic client information. These need to be signed by you before we begin.
All appointments are virtual.
Often many powerful feelings come up quickly in that first meeting. I will give you emotional room to feel what you feel and time to share whatever you are willing to talk about.
You will feel what it's like to be face-to-face with me. You will know if I seem capable of understanding your situation and if you can be with me as you feel what you feel. You will know if I seem like a person you might give an opportunity to be of help to you. You might give me a chance to accompany you and support you on your healing journey.
You may feel rigid. You may feel sad or angry. You may feel relief and hope. You may feel all these things. If you do, and you're willing and I believe that I may be able to help you and work with you, then we will make another psychotherapy appointment.
At that point, we are building a relationship and a healing bond that supports your steps toward a more free life.

Joanna provides virtual psychotherapy to residents of California, Florida, Oregon and Utah.
Since the Covid pandemic, I've learned that virtual appointments with visual connections are valuable, effective and sometimes even more personal than in-person meetings. Clients are often more relaxed in their own environment.
Eating disorders manifest psychological, emotional and spiritual stress through the body. For therapy to have meaning and optimum beneficial impact I believe the therapist and client need to be aware of physical sensations and responses.
Facial expressions, body language, a sense of rising or falling energy, changes in coloration, and a wordless sense of one another all are part of human communication. Opportunities to be aware of these experiences are necessary in the exchanges between client and therapist and are possible in virtual appointments.
Even in cyberspace, we can recognize the meaning of silences, tones of voice, and changes in breathing. This allows us to have a meaningful exchange.
Telehealth and telemental health are more accessible now, thanks to the development of communications technology and the pioneering work of Marlene M. Maheu, Ph.D. Dr. Maheu is a telepsychologist, technology developer, and the executive director of the TeleMental Health Institute. She has led workshops on legal and ethical strategies for successful distance counseling. She and her institute are valuable resources for you if you need long-distance psychotherapy.

Telephone consultations and private video consultations conducted through Skype are available.
These are informational meetings and relate to personal development issues and guidance as you work through the self-help exercises on this site and in my book, Healing Your Hungry Heart.
My main practice is with women, most of whom have or have ever had an eating disorder.
However, families with one or more members with an eating disorder can come in for short-term work to get a sense of how they can pull together to create a more healing environment for everyone. Usually, such meetings are once a week for a month or two.
Fears around food in general and some particular foods, emotional attraction to certain foods, vulnerability to binge foods, issues regarding "safe" and "unsafe" foods are certainly addressed.
My practice is a fee-for-service practice. Insurance companies, not I, make coverage decisions.
I am not a member of any HMO program, nor am I on any list of preferred providers. If you have a PPO, my fees may be partially reimbursed under the category of "out of network provider." My services may be covered by private insurance.
I work with adults only. My practice is designed for women and men who are committed to their own healing, recovery, and personal development. I work with people in an age range of 24 - 90+.
A consultation is a time-limited experience with me where you provide specific information about yourself and your situations so I can give you a professional perspective on your possible options. You use my consultation services to learn more about healing and recovery exercises and how to apply them and integrate them into your life.
