TOPIC: wondering how surgery will affect my meal plans

wondering how surgery will affect my meal plans 7 years 10 months ago #45

I am having oral surgery next week. My natural instinct is to be really, really happy to have the opportunity to lose weight by not being able to eat. I wonder how other people have gotten through this type of situation. I know that I can still obtain proper nutrition by drinking protein drinks. I just don't know that I will be interested, or have the appetite. I know this could be an opportunity to be a set back for restricting, because I will probably lose a few lbs and be motivated to keep it going. Suggestions to keep my recovery in check would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Sorry you have to have surgery :(. When I'm sick and don't feel like eating my RD works with me to create a special meal plan/guide for the week. We brainstorm what kinds of foods will be easiest to eat and I stock up on those things. She also usually has me focus on adding lot of healthy fats to things. You'd be surprised how many calories you can get into a smoothie. She often reminds me that when I don't feel well the goal is mechanical eating.

I wonder if you can decide what your goal is around ED ahead of time, make a plan, and stock up on things that will be easy to eat. You could ask someone to help remind you to try eating even if you don't feel like it. If you are alone, you could put some signs up around the house to remind yourself that you that you don't want to slip and you are going to do your best. Maybe also remind yourself to stay on top of pain control...I think it's harder to eat when pain is high.

Good luck and hope you have a speedy recovery.

I really like Laura's response, I think she offers some great advice, and I think she was spot on with the pain control comment too, if you can effectively manage any pain and discomfort then you are much more likely to want to eat.

Hope your op goes well, and you manage to keep your eating on an even keel xx

my surgery is tomorrow. I find myself nervous about it because I know I will be in a lot of pain for a few days...but today I also find myself quite looking foward to not eating for several days. I catch myself wondering how much weight I can lose and hoping that perhaps this will end my recent binging behavior and get me back "on track". Then I ask myself what does "back on track" mean? I have to admit it means restricting and losing weight. I have this absurd number in my head that I would like to lose 20 lbs before I eat "normal" again. I miss being in "control" of my eating.

It seems "normal" to me that you would have ED thoughts during a time when you are really nervous and don't feel in control and are scared. Maybe focus on comforting the part of you that is scared and tell yourself that you don't have to act on these thoughts - they are just there because you are scared. You will do the best you can for the couple of days that are hard and then you will not be perfect and then you will get back to business! Good luck. I'll be thinking about you.

yes, thank you. I am doing fine. The aneshesia gave me a horrid headache all day, but otherwise things are going well. I am just tired from the pain medication now. Going to get lot of rest today.

Hi Tracy, I was just wondering how your recovery from your op is going, and whether you are managing to stick to your meal plans okay?

Hi, Shh.
Recovery has gone well. I did lose a little weight, which is to be expected when you are in pain and can't eat. But I did not get crazy headed over it, and I have gotten back to my daily routine. Thanks for asking! :)
